Inside this issue...

• An announcement at the top of page 2 says that from now on the Free Press will be published monthly, "starting with this issue". It has also expanded from 10 pages to 12 and will include several new regular features.

This was the result of discussion about the paper's role in the wake of the Kirkby corruption exposé (details here).

The new features are "Offensive" and "News from Everywhere" (page 4) plus "Local Action" (page 2). The "informer" listings section is expanded fron one page to two.

In the event, monthly publication lasted for five months before starting to slow down again.

• The Free Press got some unexpected publicity when Eric Ogden, the Labour MP for Liverpool West Derby, complained to the House of Commons Privileges Committee about the article on page 9 which took a critical look at his parliamentary career. The committee wasn't interested in his complaint and told him to get lost.

• A three-part series on the political history of football starts on pages 6 and 7.

• The Ashe & Nephew off licence chain has sacked a manageress who refused to test the honesty of staff by creating opportunities for them to steal money (page 3).
