Inside this issue...

• Corruption in Kirkby: the results of a Free Press investigation are spread over pages 1, 5, 6, 7 and 8.

• An article on page 2 explores Marks & Spencer's resistance to trade unions. At the centre of the story is a young warehouseman called Jimmy McGovern who was sacked after encouraging staff to join USDAW, the shop workers' union.

M&S also complained that McGovern had a history of disregarding the management's wishes. They were particular about how staffed dressed (even in the warehouse) and said he had sometimes turned up without a tie and, on one occasion, in Wellington boots. He had also eaten two unsaleable broken biscuits.

Despite that, McGovern was probably fortunate to lose his job. He went on to write successful TV dramas including Cracker, The Lakes and The Street.

• When it comes to homelessness, Liverpool's Liberal-controlled council is not very liberal. Council leader Bill Smyth is furious that an evicted mother with five children were rehoused for two nights in the four-star Holiday Inn. The social worker responsible is "for the high jump", Smyth says ... and other social workers will be sacked if it happens again (page 4).
