Inside this issue...

• Stapely Hospital in Mossley Hill, which is run by a charity, has provided round-the-clock home care for the mother of solicitor E Rex Makin while her housekeeper was on holiday.

Mr Makin, who is threatening to sue the Free Press and its distributors in connection with a previous story (issues 26 and 27), is chairman of the hospital. His mother is 86 but is in reasonable health.

Four nurses from the hospital are said to have cleaned and cooked for Mrs Makin. "One was asked (in the small hours of the morning) to defrost the fridge. Another polished Mrs Makin's silver." Mr Makin is said to have paid the nurses but it was a very unusual arrangement.

• A second psychiatric patient has died in a fall from a window at Fazakerley Hospital (page 3).

• The "Oil Sheikhs of Liverpool" series continues with the story of yet another petrol station, this time off Queens Drive. Once again, the committee chaired by Councillor Roderick granted planning permission in the face of strong opposition from residents and officials (page 5).

• A second psychiatric patient has died in a fall from a window at Fazakerley Hospital (page 3).

• Job creation schemes: how well are they working? (pages 6 and 7).

• Reluctant work-in at Triumph plant (12)
